Tenant organizers are pushing for a mass rent strike on May 1st. New York tenant coalition Housing Justice for All is aiming to organize 1 million renters to withhold next month’s rent in a bid to compel Governor Cuomo to cancel rent and mortgage payments, TRD reported.
- Be Smart: In the first week of April, just 69 percent of rent payments were made. But those numbers have improved significantly, By the second week of April, rent payment rose to 84 percent, compared to 90 percent at the same time last year. The data tracks the percentage of tenants who paid some portion of their rent.
- Next month’s numbers will be key: There are about 5.4 million renters in the city, and If a large share of them cannot make rent, landlords will be unable to pay their own bills. Rent payments could drop even more drastically in May when tenants who lost jobs in March and April have even less money to pay rent.
