Saul Ramirez Jr. is the leading candidate to take over NYCHA. The former Mayor of Laredo, Texas previously ran a Washington group lobbying on behalf of housing authorities, according to TheCity. Ramirez’s selection must be pre-approved by the federal government.
The backdrop: The news comes after a deal was reached between HUD and the NYCHA, which called for the appointment of a powerful monitor and a permanent replacement to lead the troubled housing authority.
Dig Deeper: The city also agreed to invest an additional $1 billion in the authority’s dilapidated housing stock over the next four years and $200 million per year afterwards.
