Developers have always benefited from using this ‘mechanical voids’ loophole
The city’s Department of Buildings (DOB) intends to revoke permits for Extell’s proposed condo project at 50 West 66th Street. The existing plans called for large swaths of empty space between floors to increase its height (nicer views).
Dig Deeper: The point of contention is whether 160 feet of empty mechanical space is permitted. In November, the DOB rejected the same challenge filed by elected officials and neighborhood preservationist groups, according to CurbedNY.
Worth Noting: Extell brought Meridian Capital Limited on as a partner by selling an $127 million stake in the project in 2017.
