Environmental review of the Brooklyn-Queens Streetcar project to commence shortly
Plans for the $2.7 billion Brooklyn-Queens Connector (BQX) are slowly inching forward. Members of the Economic Development Corporation have approved a contract ($7.2 million) for a consultant to oversee the environmental review of the project.
Dig Deeper: The light-rail project will run from Astoria to Gowanus and has a price tag of $2.73 billion. Construction is expected to begin in 2024, according to the WSJ.
Be Smart: This project relies on the federal government to contribute $1 billion. It took a lot of political maneuvering just to secure $500 million for the $30 billion Gateway Project in the spending bill last year. Won’t be easy.
Heard on the Street: Deputy mayor Alicia Glen: “For some reason, everybody thinks we are not serious but we have always been serious…The mayor wouldn’t have re-endorsed and announced we were moving forward if we weren’t moving forward.”
