Union divided over Amazon’s LIC plans

Union support will be key for the internet giant

On the offensive: The Retail, Wholesale, and Department Store Union held a rally earlier this week where they criticized Amazon. The head of the union called the e-commerce giant, “one of the worst employers, not just in the United States but anywhere in the world.” He added that Amazon’s business model is based on “feasting on public subsidies, paying little or no taxes, and mistreating and dehumanizing its employees.” Good luck going after the most valuable company in the world!

The other side… The building service employees union 32BJ SEIU has already reached agreements with the developers (TF Cornerstone and Plaxall) of Amazon’s proposed headquarters to ensure they won’t oppose the unionization of workers, according to Politico.

Poll from last month: 57 percent of NYC residents approve of Amazon’s new headquarters in LIC, while 26 percent oppose the move. However, only 46 percent support providing the internet giant with $2.8 billion in taxpayer subsidies, whereas 44 percent oppose.
