Amazon tests cashier-less checkout technology

Amazon has begun testing its cashier-less checkout technology in large spaces formatted like a big store (think Whole Foods), according to the WSJ. If successful, the strategy will further challenge brick-and-mortar retailers. The checkout-free system is already operational in a few Amazon Go stores

The vision: In order to compete with chains like CVS and Walmart, the technology must apply across all sized stories. Amazon plans to open as many as 3,000 cashier-less stores by 2021. 

Future of retail: The stores use cameras and software to detect items that customers pick up and charges them accordingly. With the help of a smartphone app, it allows shoppers to forgo the entire check-out process.
