How Real Estate helped bring down Joe Crowley

The industry became a punching bag for her campaign

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez stunned the political world by defeating Representative Joe Crowley of Queens in the democratic primary, according to the NYTimes. Crowley was a good friend of our industry. 

Real Estate ties helped take him down: The young 28-year-old centered her campaign around Crowley’s ties to the real estate lobby, saying that he no longer had the best interest of his constituents in mind. She said, “it’s time we stand up to the luxury developer lobby. Every official is too scared to do it – except me.” 

Takeaway: Unfortunately, our industry has become a political punching bag. She harped on New York City’s affordable housing crisis, which her policies will ironically exacerbate.

Other reason Crowley went down: With immigration being at the forefront of the political world, pundits credited her victory to running to the left of Crowley on immigration. She called for for the abolition of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE), while Crowley would only go as far as calling it ‘fascist’.
